I feel that many people who do not believe in God, and even some who do, think that once you become a Christian your life is just an easy road. Now, once you accept Christ as your savior, he does watch over you, and is with you wherever you go. But that doesn't mean you will never face adversity.
There's a story in Mark 4 about Jesus and his disciples. As it became evening, Jesus told them to go across the sea to the other side. So they left the crowds that had been following them, got in the boat, and headed out to sea. As they were in the water, a powerful windstorm hit and began sending waves into the boat threatening to capsize it. But as the disciples faced this storm, Jesus was asleep in the stern of the boat. They became frantic and woke him saying, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" Jesus got up and said to the wind and the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And all of a sudden the winds and waves stopped. Jesus then questioned why the disciples were so afraid and if they had faith in him. Imagine the awe, fear, and respect that began to fill the disciples. They had gone from being terrified of the storm outside the boat to being fearful of a God who controls the storms inside the boat. But as the storm subsided, they made it safely to the other side of the Sea of Galilee to the country of Gerasenes.
So how did the disciples end up in the middle of a storm? They had done what Jesus asked them to do. It was his idea to go to the other side, not theirs. You may be smack dab in the middle of God's will for your life and still be going through a storm. But if you have accepted Christ as your savior, you don't have to go through the storm alone. You can have the one who commands that storm on your side. Isn't that reason enough to want Jesus in your life?
These experienced professional fisherman were afraid for their lives and didn't know what to do when faced with this storm. They thought this was the end of the road for them as their boat began to fill with water. These guys weren't rookies, this could not have been the first storm they faced, and possibly not the fiercest, but nonetheless it had them scared. We all face different storms, death of loved ones, financial hardships, relationship difficulties, and many more. But one thing remains true, if we follow the Lord's will, he will get us to the other side, just as he did the disciples in this story. When they didn't see a way out, they turned to Jesus and he saved them, and he can do the same for you today.
Being a Christian doesn't prevent us from going through storms, difficult things still happen. But it does give us someone to call on to help us through them if we place our faith in Jesus.
