"The last thing believers many believers need today is to go to another Bible study. They already know far more than they are putting into practice. What they need are serving experiences in which they can exercise their spiritual muscles." - Rick Warren
Now let that sink in for a minute because I'm pretty sure that most of think that if we are going to, hosting, or even leading a Bible study that we are going above and beyond what God calls us to do. I mean we may already be going to church Sunday morning, Sunday evening, and Wednesday evening so throwing in another hour or two session with God is good stuff.
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." - Ephesians 2:10. We are called to DO something, not just to KNOW something. What good is knowing the glory, power, grace, and mercy that is found in salvation if we are not going to share it with someone?!?! I don't know the whole Bible, I'm studying more stories in it each day trying to gradually learn more about this God who created me. But I do know my story. I know what God has done for me because I've seen it, experienced it, lived it; and you know your story too
We spend so much time saying we need to be fed or be taught the Bible. If you are an "adult Christian" you should be able to eat on your own. Yes I enjoy corporate worship services and there are sermons that inspire me to get off my lazy tail for a few days or even a couple weeks if it was really great. But what if instead of going to church every week hoping to hear a Sunday school lesson or a sermon to inspire me, I went to church every Sunday to serve an area that needs another volunteer, or what if I'm helping at a food bank or soup kitchen, or an area of need in the community.
Knowledge and Bible study is vital to our Christian lives, but service is the exercise that truly strengthens our spiritual muscles. I know I haven't done all I need to do in service. So instead of fitting time into my schedule for God, I will try to do God's will and pray that He provides time for the other "stuff" I want in my life.
Works are not a means of salvation, they are a result of it. If we truly want people to see God in us, then we have to show them before we can tell them.
