Redefine by God's Word, not man's word

As media and the government try to redefine things in our world like marriage and gender, we as Christians much search God's Word to see what it says on such topics.  This is necessary for multiple reasons:
1.  1 Peter 3:15 tells us to "always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that it is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect."
2.  Our eyes, minds, and hearts are being flooded with pictures, images, and sounds promoting sinful things of the earth and the only way to keep ourselves pure is to guard our heart with vigilance, Proverbs 4:23.  An excellent analogy of this that I've heard is that what's in the well comes up in the bucket, we must pray to keep our hearts pure.
3.  We have to stand up for our beliefs.  Matthew 5:14-16 tells us that we are the light of the world, and that we are to let our lights shine.  Well if the world isn't dark then our lights wouldn't shine very brightly.  Go outside at noon and turn on a flashlight, you probably can't see the beam of light.  Then go outside at midnight and turn on that same flashlight and it will shine brightly.  This is why Christians are easy to spot in today's world.

Now that I've tried to cover why we have to stand up against these things, let me try to shed some light through the scriptures on how to do so.

Gender:  In Genesis 1:27, "God created them male and female."  The genders of mankind are listed in the first book of the Bible, there are no others.  Cross-dressing was a problem and therefore even prohibited in biblical times; "A woman shall not wear a man's garment, nor shall a man put on a woman's cloak, for whoever does these things is an abomination to the Lord your God" - Deuteronomy 22:5.  Deuteronomy was written around 1405 BC so cross-dressing and being transgender isn't even "trendy", it was being done 3,400 years ago.  In 1 Corinthians 6:9 the KJV uses both the words, fornicators and effeminate, to describe sexual sin suggesting that these could have been men dressed as women engaged in prostitution as well as people with multiple sexual partners at the time.  There are a few verses, I've let some other comments or jokes that could be made go unsaid because I am trying to be gentle and respectful but I will stand up for what I believe, and for what the Bible says.

Marriage:  The Supreme Court ruled recently that same-sex marriage would become legal.  This is the same supreme court mind that you also legalized baby murder and called it abortion, but that's a topic for another day.  Marriage is a beautiful thing.  Jesus has this to say about it in Matthew 19:4-6; "Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female (see how Jesus threw that in there for us again), and said, Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.  What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate."

- "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination." - Leviticus 18:22.  John McArthur goes on his study bible that this outlaws all homosexuality.
- "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed and abomination; they shall surely be put to death." - Leviticus 20:13
- "For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions.  For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error." - Romans 1:26-27.  This passage in Romans teaches us that individuals give in to homosexuality because of sin and because of their own choice.  Yes an individual may be born with a greater vulnerability to give into homosexual temptation but that is no different from someone who is born with a greater tendency to steal or be violent toward others.  We would not give a person who becomes a career thief a pass just because they had a tendency to do such things, they had a choice, and they chose sin.

As our government and media continue to redefine more things in an antichristian aspect, I pray that we as Christians will stand up for our beliefs.  I pray that we search the scriptures for answers to difficult issues of the day, and that we seek godly counsel when making decisions concerning what news outlets we watch, what policies we agree with, and what politicians we vote for.  Thank you Lord that your forgiveness is available to all sinners, murders, homosexuals, idolaters, thieves, and me.  Thank you for the ultimate sacrifice that covered it all, the blood of your son, Jesus Christ.

2020 is Hindsight...Finally!

Wow, what a year! 2020 could literally be an entire decade, maybe more, of history, change, and lessons rolled up into these twelve months. While many aspects of 2020 were kind of sucky and we would like to forget them, it will certainly be a year to remember. And it will be enlightening when this year is looked back on in 10, 25, or 50 years to be discussed. I wonder if we'll seem like geniuses or idiots? Probably both to some extent! While there is so much that I could consider and analyze about this year, I'll try to break some of it down into four dimensions - Physical, Spiritual, Mental, and Social/Emotional. These are events and happenings from my world and perspective and I'm trying to be open in sharing and would love to hear from others on events you found most transforming. Physical When COVID cause gyms to close, that messed me up. Our town and state were late to be hit with severe cases and therefore later than many across the country to close up shop. I'm n...

How to Pray - The Object of Our Prayer

In our College & Career Sunday school class this week, we started a series titled, "How to Pray."  I plan to try to and share the lessons each week in case anyone wants to follow along with us here...or you can come join us Sunday mornings at Tabernacle at 10 AM in room 218. Any good speaker, teacher, or presenter knows that the #1 rule of public speaking is to know your audience.  You don't want to prepare a discussion about retirement for preschoolers and a presentation themed with Disney princesses most likely wouldn't spark the interest of a group of businessmen.  In order for someone to prepare a dynamic and engaging presentation, they must know their audience, who they're preparing to talk to. The same is true in our prayer life.  The Point of this week's study is: "A right view of God fuels how we pray."  The conversations we engage in with our friends about are often focused on topics that interest them: their favorite team, favorite ...

Lessons in Prayer - 1 Timothy 2:1-8 - Our Attitudes

I'm still working through this same passage on prayer from 1 Timothy and I won't copy all the verses but you can read from the beginning to have a better understanding of the full passage. "...That we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.  This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior." - 1 Timothy 2:2b-3 Paul's plea for Timothy here is for the church to live peaceful and quiet lives.  So how do we do that?  Well the thought of peacefulness is a life that is free from internal disturbances or distractions.  We must first be at peace with ourselves before we can be at peace with others.  A quiet life is one that flows from being peaceful and is a life free from external disturbances and distractions.  Now this does not mean that the church is to just go along with whatever the world says in order to be peaceful.  We are not to waver on biblical truth period.  You won't find true Christian...
