Our Sunday school lesson this past week was based on the word moderate. The word moderate is defined by Webster as average in size or amount, so average is found right there in the middle. Did the words moderate of average ever cross your mind when you were a child playing sports, or dreaming of what you wanted to be when you grew up? Likely not, we all wanted to be professionals at whatever sport we played, or to become the president of a company, or country, one day.
So as we grow into adults, why do we start to settle for average? What causes us to lose that passion and desire to be the best? What parent wants their child to make average grades, have average success, and have an average life when they grow up? As parents, we want the best for our children; their friendships, sports teams, grades, etc. How much greater love do you think our Heavenly Father has for us? God doesn't tell us to settle for middle ground, so it seems to me that weight gets put on us from the world.
I don't want to do anything and someone say that I'm just average, and I don't believe that God likes average either. Many of us get motivated and inspired to go the extra mile and push a little harder when we're up for a raise or promotion at work, or when we have a fitness goal right on the horizon that we see within reach. But how hard are we working on our Christian walk and relationship with God? I hope we are all putting forth an above average effort in our faith.
Do you know that God says about an average faith? "I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth" - Revelation 3:15-16. Wow, that's pretty harsh. I can tell you that once Baby Thomas spits something out his mouth, it means he's done with it and it is not going back into his mouth. Do you want God to consider you lukewarm and be done with you? I know I don't.
As we evaluate how hot or cold we are for Christ, think about this. What does it take to make water room temperature?
Nothing. It takes nothing to make it room temperature. An outside force or action is only required to make the water hot or cold. What are you doing for God on a daily basis? If the answer is nothing, you better check your temp!
