Some people know my daily routine of waking up early, having my quiet time, then going to the gym. It's not easy. Honestly the waking up part isn't the hardest part, it was training my mind and body to go to bed earlier. That change in my life has cost me relationships with people who I'm just not able to hang out with at night, and activities I often have to skip out on due to the time. I haven't lost any friendships over it but that time together is impacted by things.
It takes discipline to do the hard things in life, but to strive for greatness it takes sacrifices. A verse that helps me keep going when it's not fun is Hebrews 12:11, "For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."
When that alarm clock goes off in the morning, some days I'm amped and ready to get to the gym. Some days though, I'm tired, stressed with too much to do and too much on my mind, and just not in the mood to get up and go. But what benefit will come from sleeping another couple hours versus getting up and training? Nothing! In those first moments getting up, especially on cold days, it's painful. My back and legs are stiff from the day before and from laying in bed all night. So no it's not always pleasant and fun. There's a reason the phrase the "daily grind" is often used instead of just a daily cruise through life's activities. But day in and day out I've stayed disciplined to get up and go.
But what does that discipline result in? Physically it results in getting faster, stronger, leaner, or whatever your fitness goals you're working towards are. Spiritually you become more like Christ. You begin to yield fruits, become a more joyful person, and see the hope that is in Him. And notice the last part of the verse, those who are getting the results are the ones who have been trained by it. No discipline yields no results. Some days are a struggle, but discipline is what makes us push through the pain to ensure that our struggles do not become our failures.
