We all know that we are human, we make mistakes, and that we are sinners. If you didn't, now you know that. And if thought you were perfect, just ask around and some of your close friends will likely inform you that you aren't. And in case you don't think you sin, Romans 3:23 says, "For ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God."
Football season has kicked off at the high school and pre-season NFL levels, and is just around the corner for college. There are certain rules in football that all players and teams have to follow (Yes, some of them don't make sense but that's for a different post).
In football, if a player makes a mistake and receives a penalty, the whole teams loses the yardage. If a lineman jumps offside, the team goes back give yards. If someone gets a holding penalty, the team loses ten yards. And if a player or coach loses their composure for a moment and receives a personal foul penalty, the entire team has to back up fifteen yards. Each penalty has different consequences, but they have one commonality - each one sends the team backwards.
For a football team to keep moving forward and getting closer to a touchdown, they must follow the playbook designed by their coach without breaking the rules. Sin in our lives is simply when we don't follow the rules, and get off the script of our playbook in the game of life, the Bible. Whenever we commit a sin against God, we not only stop ourselves from moving forward - two more things happen.
One, we go backwards. We may be dealt a setback spiritually, physically, or financially. Two, our entire team goes backwards with us. Sin doesn't just affect you, it affects everyone around you, your entire team; parents, siblings, cousins, children, friends, etc. We can control whether or not we choose to sin, but we cannot control the consequences of those sins. Just like penalties in football, each sin has a different and specific consequence to us and those around us.
