At what point in time did people start thinking that we are smarter than God? So many laws coming out today are in direct opposition to scripture. God and His Word are THE ultimate authority. Not the House of Representatives, the Senate, or the President. We are to respect people in roles of authority and follow them as leaders since the Lord has placed them there but ONLY if they are not being contradictory to God. In rulings that are not in alignment with his word, we are to obey God's law over man's law.
"Having brought the apostles, they made them appear before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. 'We gave strict orders not to teach in this name,' he said. 'Yet you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man's blood.' Peter and the other apostles replied: 'We must obey God rather than men!" - Acts 5:27-29
Peter and the other apostles had been called before the courts to be questioned and charged for disobeying a direct order from the leaders of the day to not spread the word of Jesus Christ. It was an easy answer for them and should be an easy response for us on such issues. I'm not questioning Romans 13 where we are instructed to submit to authority and to pay to authority what is due them (taxes, revenue, respect, honor); I'm saying that those in authority are not above the laws of God.
"There is one rule of law greater than all the rules man creates - the rule of the law of the God who created us. Where God's law and man's conflict, God's law always prevails." - Tony Dungy
We have to answer to God first, not man. It's so easy today with the internet to post inflammatory rhetoric online then hide behind it anonymously. Christians are called to speak out openly and civilly when we are called to do so by God. Take a stand for what you believe in today.
The real problem with many of the issues of today isn't the actual issues but the foundation of why people believe it's okay to make laws contradictory to God's word. There are so many topics that this could apply to: prayer in schools, gay rights, abortion, etc.; but we have got to remember that not having Christianity in something (government or schools) is still having religion there...it's called atheism, naturalism, humanism, whatever name you want to use for it.
We each make our own personal choice of who we will follow..."But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord." - Joshua 24:15
