We have seen through the last couple posts that God has called Moses to do something that seems much too difficult for him to accomplish. Read Parts 1 and 2 if you haven't already as they pretty much intro this post.
Prior to picking up with Moses' next excuse, God gave him several signs in Exodus 4:1-9. He turned Moses' staff into a serpent, then back to a staff; turned Moses' hand leprous by placing it into his cloak then restoring it in the same manner; then told Moses that if the people would not listen and believe these signs that he could take water from the Nile and pour it on the ground and it would become blood.
Yet after not only witnessing, but performing these miraculous signs through God, Moses continues with the excuses. In Exodus 4:10, Moses says to the Lord, "I am not eloquent...I am slow of speech and of tongue." God responds to Moses by asking, "Who has made man's mouth? Who makes him mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you shall speak." (Exodus 4:11-12). You see, Scripture doesn't have too be intimidating or complex. This is pretty straightforward stuff. Moses said he wasn't a good speaker and didn't know what to say. God responds by reminding Moses that He made his mouth and that He would teach him what to say. Just like with Moses, God equips us physically and mentally to do what He calls us to do still today.
But still Moses, like many of us, at the end of his excuses finally gets honest about the situation. In v13 he finally says, "Oh, my Lord, please send someone else." And at this, the Lord became angry with Moses. But He was merciful to Moses and promised to send his brother, Aaron, who just so happened to be a good speaker, with him. When God has willed something, He will make it come to pass. Through all of Moses' excuses, He offered answers and solutions providing a way even as Moses attempted to refuse God's call.
What excuses do we find ourselves giving God? The next time you give Him an excuse of why you can't, wait for His answer before assuming your answer has been accepted by Him. Remember who has called you and respond in accordance with the great I AM.
